Exciting Study Reveals the Power of AI-Enabled Handheld Ultrasound!

We are thrilled to share groundbreaking findings from a recent study led by Dr. Andre Kumar of Stanford Health.

The study explored the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into ultrasound devices and its potential to enhance image acquisition and interpretation for novice users. The results are remarkable, showcasing the powerful impact Kosmos and AI-enabled point-of-care ultrasound may have on closing the experience gap for novice users.

Here’s how it went: participants in the two-week study were divided into two groups: one using EchoNous’ AI-enabled device, Kosmos Torso One, and the other using a device without AI functionality (Butterfly IQ). Kosmos AI provided automatic labeling of cardiac structures, guided probe placement, advanced image grading, and auto ejection fraction. The study recorded significant differences between the groups, with the Kosmos AI group demonstrating faster scan times, higher image quality scores, and improved identification of reduced systolic function compared to the non-AI group.

These findings highlight the potential of AI to enhance image acquisition and interpretation for novices and improve diagnostic accuracy, which could have a profound impact on outcomes. It may also help to empower novice users to become more proficient more quickly (though this has yet to be tested). One interesting point to note in this study is that the AI group didn’t report being more confident than the non-AI group. This indicates that, with AI, confidence or lack thereof doesn’t appear to have an impact on performance. That is, even with the same level of confidence as the non-AI group, the AI group performed better across the board.

We are encouraged to see validation of our efforts to reduce the training barrier for novice users with our AI features (Trio and Auto-EF) and look forward to releasing many more AI enhancements over the coming months. We are dedicated to enabling faster ultrasound adoption around the world and across the spectrum of healthcare by making handheld ultrasound more capable, more accessible, and easier to learn.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we continue to push the boundaries of AI-enabled point-of-care ultrasound!
